What is Electrical Stimulation Therapy (E-Stim)?

There are several different types of e-stim and different reasons to use e-stim. A popular e-stim is called a "TENS unit". It stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, and the sole purpose of that device is to treat chronic pain that is not getting better from other sources.
The TENS unit is used to block the pain from the source (or area causing the pain) to the brain. The brain will not be able to register painful sensations because the TENS unit, in essence, scrambles the message. There are also e-stim units that are designed to relax or break up muscle spasms, while others were designed to cause contraction in the muscles to strengthen them.
The electrical stimulation therapy process used in our office is designed to relax tight muscles (or muscle spams), so those muscles don't pull the bones out of alignment that have been recently adjusted.
