How Does Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Work?

Non-surgical spinal decompression therapy is a method of traction therapy that has been used to help people with lower back problems including herniated discs. At Northwest Wellness Center, we have been sharing the benefits of spinal decompression with residents of Dublin, OH for many years.

What is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression?

This type of therapy is done in a chiropractor's or doctor's office. Patients are connected via straps to a machine. This machine will gently stretch and decompress the spine. Patients will be laying down on a table during this procedure. This table can be manipulated, allowing patients to be at an angle. Between the table and the pulling on the machine, the spine will be pulled gently, allowing it to stretch.

As it does so, the muscles in the back will move and stretch. Patients who are experiencing pain because of a herniated disc will often have that disc move back into place. Other patients who are experiencing pain because of a pinched nerve will often find that the pressure that nerve was under will be alleviated.

The Treatment Process

Most patients will have to undergo multiple treatment sessions. This is because the spine must be moved gently and slowly. Over time, the muscles and spine will tend to shift back to their proper position. Eventually, the pain relief will become permanent.
